“If I Didn’t Believe in You” | The Last Five Years
This is the song where I officially breakdown. It’s probably because I can easily slip myself into Cathy’s position. About six years down the line being in a serious relationship with someone that is becoming highly successful while I’m still trying to find my footing and becoming a tad resentful toward them. Feeling as if all of their success is being shoved down your face, down your throat and needing to shut down. Wanting to be happy and supportive but not willing to take that step because in the back of your mind you’re always thinking that you were supposed to reach this point together. Knowing that you both took a gamble and feeling like you’ve finally gone bankrupt while your partner hit the jackpot. Not being jealous because of another woman (which I don’t have the ability to do anyway) but of something great and wonderful that really you have no business being upset about but you can’t help yourself. It’s such a sickening thing for me to think about. Ugh this song just hits a nerve.
